AMD Athlon X2 5000+
$66.00
Released December, 2006
The Pros:Enough power to open applications extremely quickly. Start-up and shut-down times are very quick. Can be overclocked a fair bit past the factory defaults.
The Cons:Generates significant heat when overclocked, need a higher end aftermarket heatsink and cooling system. Doesn't come with a heatsink or fan.
A middle of the road option in the AMD lineup, the AMD Athlon 5000+ can handle whatever you throw at it competently. Rated at 2.6GHz with a TDP of 65W, the 5000+ is cool and efficient enough to be quiet and light on the utility bill, but strong enough to handle a fair bit of gaming or encoding without becoming a system bottleneck that causes major delays.
